Hyundai Recalls over 200,000 Vehicles

Japanese automaker Hyundai has announced that it is recalling over 200,000 vehicles because of the potential for power steering loss. The Hyundai power steering loss recall applies to the 2008-2010 Hyundai Elantra and the 2009-2010 Hyundai Elantra Touring.

The defect, which has been known to Hyundai since 2010, can lead to the loss of power steering capabilities while the car is in motion.  Power steering systems use electric or hydraulic components to reduce the amount of effort that drivers need to use on the steering wheel to control a car or truck. The loss of these functions can make the vehicle much more difficult to operate, particularly at lower speeds.

Hyundai explained its decision to hold off on recalling the vehicles until now (despite years of knowledge of the issue) because of its understanding of U.S. regulations:

Hyundai’s understanding has been that the loss of power steering assist has not, in the past, been considered as a safety-related defect in the United States….”

It should be noted, however, that there have been no accidents or injuries attributed to this defect. Nevertheless, the Hyundai recall decision was based on the current industry trend towards more safety-conscious recalls.

Hyundai Recall Follows Other Massive Vehicle Recalls

Hyundai’s decision to take a more conservative approach and recall its vehicles is no doubt motivated, at least in part, by the criticism surrounding recent high-profile vehicle recalls. First, GM has recalled millions of vehicles because of an ignition-switch defect that can cause cars to shut off while being driven and cause airbag failure in the event of a crash. So far, 57 deaths have been linked to the defect.

Then, Japanese manufacturer Takata Corporation has been under heavy scrutiny over an airbag recall affecting millions of vehicles of many makes and models.  The Takata airbag recall relates to the potential for the airbag propellant can to explode and send debris flying at vehicle occupants.  The recall has created an incredibly intense situation between the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and Takata, with the NHTSA fining Takata $14,000 a day for its alleged failure to cooperate in the recall investigation.
