On October 2, an explosion and subsequent fire at a SunEdison silicon plant injured four workers. The explosion occurred at SunEdison’s silicon plant in Pasadena, Texas, located on the Houston Ship Channel.
Details are limited at this time, and the cause of the accident is still being investigated. However, the explosion occurred during maintenance operations and caused a chemical release. A representative of SunEdison discussed the environmental impacts:
“As a result of the accident, there was a discharge of silicon dioxide, which is a naturally occurring material commonly found in sand.”
Thankfully, there is no danger to the community expected from the release.
The injured workers were treated at local hospitals for burns following the explosion and fire. Early indications are that the injuries suffered by the workers are not life-threatening.
Previous Health and Safety Issues Involving SunEdison
The recent SunEdison plant explosion was not the first incident to involve SunEdison’s facility. The plant has a history of health and safety issues involving plant workers. For example, workers were previously treated for exposure to chemicals, other accidents were reported, and the facility was cited and fined by regulatory agencies.
In fact, SunEdison supposedly made changes to its operations in 2008, following two unrelated incidents, that were intended to prevent future issues.
Then, in 2011, the company entered into a settlement agreement with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) to resolve a regulatory matter. This settlement allegedly included enhanced safety requirements for the plant.
